Adjusting to the new normal of working from home

Over the course of one week, events and corporate meetings are shifting or getting canceled altogether, and schools and workplaces are shutting down. As we experience a major shift in how and where we work over the next few weeks, it’s important to focus on what we can control and leverage the support of family and community as you move forward.

Here are some tips to help you adjust to your new normal:

1. Ensure your workspace is safe and secure
Thinking of working from your local coffee shop or library? This might not be the best option, considering you never know how the people around you are feeling and how clean the surfaces are around you. Read more about keeping your personal workspaces clean here.

2. Leverage what you can virtually
You’d be surprised what workplaces have done over the last few years to ensure teams can be productive remotely. Communicate with your manager to ensure you’re leveraging the latest tools available to you, such as virtual log-ins to VPNs, communication channels like #slack and G-Chat, video conferencing, and even virtual concierge services. Our teams are available to provide individual services to remote workers such as meal delivery, wellness experiences and other convenience needs.

3. Stay energized
Avoid sitting in your pajamas all day at your desk. Take a break every hour — whether it’s taking a walk, doing chores around the house, chopping up ingredients for a healthy meal or doing a workout.

4. Build in mindfulness activities
Believe it or not, you may not realize how the stress and anxiety these changes can be impacting your body. Stay in tune with your emotions — one way to do this is to set aside time for meditation. Breathe, clear your mind, be in tune with how you’re feeling and use it as a way to reset.

5. Focus on the future
Although we cannot predict when this time of caution will be over, take note of the experiences you are looking forward to having once everything is back to normal. From summer vacation, to work gatherings and parties, to even simple routines you are cutting out for the time being like going to the gym–envisioning these will lead to a much deeper appreciation when the time comes to experience them.
