DIY: Outdoor Games Part 2

Concierge Ashley enjoys playing ladder ball with friends during the summer months. You too can enjoy this game by following our step-by-step instructions to create your own!

To build the two ladder structures you will need to purchase following items from your local home improvement store:

  • Hack saw (sometimes they can cut the PVC in the store for you)
  • (5) 10 foot long sticks of 3/4″ PVC pipe
  • (12) 3/4″ PVC “T” connectors
  • (12) 3/4″ PVC “elbow” connectors

The next step is to cut the PVC pipe. For each ladder structure you will need the following.

  • (9) 2’ long pieces
  • (6) 1’ long pieces

You will first want to create a base & then build a ladder structure with the pieces.

Note: If you want an extra-sturdy structure, you could glue everything together. But, I found that everything fits snug & it is nice to have the option to disassemble for storage.

To make the ball bolas (ideally you want at least 6 bolas) you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Drill and bit (that will fit your rope)
  • Approx. 15’of nylon rope/cord
  • (12) rubber balls (i.e. bouncy balls, tennis balls, etc) – ideally (6) of two colors
  • Paper clip
  • Lighter

Start by drilling holes in the balls (the drill bit may not go through easily unless it was already started first).

Once you’ve drilled the holes, you’ll need to lace the nylon cord through. To do this, cut six 20-25″ (your preference) pieces of cord; use the lighter to seal each end of the rope. Then, make a “large needle” out of a paper clip, lace it through the cord, and pull the cord through the ball.

Then, tie knots on each side of each ball. You’ll end up with ball bolas containing approximately 12″ of cord between each ball.

Now you’re ready to start playing!
