Bring Mardi Gras Flavor Home!

Not able to get away and experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans? No problem! Bring the flavors of New Orleans into your house.

You can create an impressive Jambalaya bar that is customizable with your favorite toppings so everyone will be pleased. This is perfect for a weeknight meal or a fun dinner party for friends.

Start by making a large batch of your favorite Jambalaya rice. You can use a boxed variety like Zatarains and Uncle Bens, or make you own using the recipe below.

Jambalaya Rice

  • Mardi Gras Blog Picture1 Cup Risotto Rice
  • 1 Can Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 Onion, diced
  • 1 Green Pepper, diced
  • 4 Cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 2 tbsp. Tomato Paste
  • 2 tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 4 Cups Chicken Stock
  • ½ Cup Dry White Wine
  • 1/8-1/4 tsp. Cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsp. Cajun Seasoning
  • ½ tsp. Cumin
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Start by heating the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Sauté the onion, pepper until they start to soften. Add in the tomato paste and garlic. Season with salt and pepper.

Stir in the risotto rice and cook for about 2 minutes. Add in the white wine and stir until the liquid has been absorbed. Keep stirring and adding the chicken stock until the rice has absorbed it all. Stir in the can of diced tomatoes and seasonings. Tasting and adjusting if need be. Keep warm until ready to serve.

Once you have your rice ready to go you can start to cook your proteins. Andouille sausage, chicken and shrimp are all great additions to your jambalaya bar. Diced bell peppers, tomatoes and onions are all perfect pairings to include.

Set all your rice toppings in separate bowls and allow your guests to add any and all toppings they’d like. Enjoy!

We’d love feedback and photos of your own jambalaya bar!
